There are some protections if you can both prove truth (a tall order for most survivors, and frequently subjective in a world hostile against us), and the subject is of public interest - but the level of protection is variable based on state. That may not be very helpful - I had one lawyer tell me that the good news is that some home owners or renters insurance covers defamation claims! Lol.
